UPS’ eBike service, launched Nov. 21, relies on electronic tricycles to deliver packages in crowded, urban environments, according to a company statement.
The eBikes contain battery-powered electric motors, allowing workers to cover greater distances than regular bikes, carry heavy loads and navigate hills and other terrain, according to UPS.
While UPS already uses electronic bikes to deliver packages through a pilot program in Europe, this is the first time the Atlanta-based company will use the electric-powered bikes in the U.S.
UPS hopes the eBikes will help limit traffic congestion, reduce vehicle emissions and meet growing e-commerce demands. Based on the success of Portland’s pilot program, UPS may deploy the eBikes to other cities in the U.S. in 2017.
