Cleveland-based University Hospitals has become the first health system in the U.S. to install Siemens Healthineers’ Naeotom Alpha.Pro scanner.

The Naeotom Alpha.Pro is a dual-source scanner with photon-counting computed tomography technology, according to a Sept. 4 news release from Siemens Healthineers.

The PCCT technology allows physicians to “evaluate small structures precisely and with few artifacts using lower radiation doses than conventional CT,” the release said. The technology also improves traditional scan speed.

“The low-dose capabilities of the Naeotom Alpha.Pro, as well as its potential to eliminate patient sedation through fast scanning, will benefit our pediatric patients at UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital,” Donna Plecha, MD, chair of the department of radiology, radiologist-in-chief, and Ida and Irwin Haber and Wei-Shen Chin, MD Chair in Radiology at University Hospitals, said in the release. “Additionally, we anticipate using the scanner for some of our patients in UH Cleveland Medical Center’s emergency department, which supports a Level I Trauma Center.”
