Survey: 49% of companies think supply chains will be simpler in next 5 years

Nearly half of business leaders believe their supply chains will become simpler in the near future, according to a survey from The Economist Intelligence Unit.

The EIU polled 522 business leaders from 13 countries in February 2017. Forty-eight percent of respondents held C-suite or board positions, and the remaining 52 percent were senior executives and other senior managers.

Here are five survey findings.

  1. A majority (93 percent) of respondents cited technological innovation as important for supply chain management.
  1. Nearly half (49 percent) of leaders expect supply chains to be simplified in the next five years.
  1. One-third of respondents believe supply chains will grow more complex in the same time period.
  1. Forty-three percent of leaders said they plan to form new supplier relationships in the next year to improve data reliability.
  1. Respondents cited improved visibility (39 percent) as the greatest need to better manage supply chains, followed by contingency plans for disruptions (36 percent) and managing supplier payments (31 percent).
