Viiv Healthcare conducted two identical, year-long trials — each involving about 500 patients — for its HIV pill dolutegravir. Results showed dolutegravir, when used with Johnson & Johnson’s rilpivirine, suppressed HIV just as well as conventional three- or four-drug treatment methods, according to the report.
Allowing patients to follow a treatment regimen of fewer drug combinations could help lower side effects of antiretroviral medicines, which often include nausea, diarrhea and bone-thinning, among others.
Dominique Limet, CEO of Viiv Healthcare, said the company expects to submit the two-drug combination to regulators in 2017. Both dolutegravir and rilpivirine are already sold as components of three- or four-drug combinations.
