The FDA has issued an early alert involving all Medline Brand beds and associated components after Medline reported two deaths and 16 serious injuries associated with potential fire and entrapment risks.

Medline identified a potential fire hazard involving its beds, hand-control pendants, control/motor boxes and actuators/motors, according to an FDA alert current as of Oct. 29. Under certain conditions, electrical components may overheat, potentially leading to smoking, sparking, melting, burning or fire.

Medline also identified potential entrapment or asphyxiation risks associated with bed accessories, patients lying on pendants and beds with loose or wobbly rails. The action affects all Medline Brand beds and associated components, including homecare beds, bariatric beds, long-term care beds, pendants, accessories, replacement parts and bed-containing order packages.

Medline’s updated instructions allow affected beds, rails, mattresses and accessories to remain in use until repaired or replaced. Users should unplug beds from electrical outlets except when adjustments are needed and should not use extension cords. Certain products may qualify for repair, replacement or a full or partial refund.
