‘Dollars for Docs’: 20 drug, device makers that paid physicians the most last year

Genentech and Zimmer Biomet were among the device or pharma companies that paid U.S. physicians the most in 2018, according to data released Oct. 17 by ProPublica’s Dollars for Doctors Project.

The site includes data published by CMS on June 28. Drugmakers must release details of their payments to hospitals for promotional talks, research and consulting as well as other gifts. 

Below are the top 20 companies and what they paid physicians in 2018:

1. Genentech — $478 million

2. Zimmer Biomet —  $109 million

3. Stryker — $91.9 million

4. Boston Scientific —  $82.2

5. Allergan — $73 million

6. Arthrex — $70.3 million

7. Medtronic — $66 million

8. Depuy Syntheses — $61.7 million

9. Pfizer — $48.9 million

10. AstraZeneca — $45 million

11. AbbVie — $42.9 million

12. Amgen — $41.4 million

13. Intuitive Surgical — $39.8 million

14. Medical Device Business Services — $39.1 million

15. Gilead Sciences — $38.6 million

16. Medtronic —$37.9 million

17. Merck — $37.4 million

18. Genzyme — $35.2 million

19. Abbott Laboratories — $33.8 million

20. Novartis — $32.1 million
