Cold drug swabs recalled over fungal contamination risk

Church & Dwight Co. has issued a nationwide recall of several over-the-counter swab-based drug products due to the risk of fungal contamination.

The recall affects all lots within expiry of Zicam Cold Remedy Nasal Swabs, Zicam Nasal AllClear Swabs and Orajel baby teething swabs, which were distributed across the U.S. and Puerto Rico, according to a June 6 FDA news release.

Internal testing revealed potential microbial contamination in the cotton swab components used in the affected products.

While no serious adverse events have been reported to date, the company warned the contamination could pose serious health risks, and in severe cases exposure could lead to bloodstream infections.
