Batelle, Halyard to develop medical device wrap

Batelle and Halyard Health will join forces to produce a medical device wrap through a $14.4 million, four-year contract awarded by the Office of Naval Research in Arlington, Va.

The contract calls for the development of the Protective Oxygenating Wrap for Enhanced Recovery. The intended device will be a conformal cover that protects an injured limb with enhanced wound dressing materials and provides a therapeutic cocktail that suppresses microbe proliferation. POWER will also deliver oxygen to the limb, promoting tissue survival for up to 72 hours.

Columbus, Ohio-based Battelle and Alpharetta, Ga.-based Halyard plan to produce the device as a small, light-weight package medics and corpsmen can carry on the battlefield and use in conjunction with a tourniquet. However, the device could also be used by first responders in the U.S. reacting to urban violence or domestic terrorism.

Design concepts for POWER are already in development and the project will reach prototype stage by late 2017.
