Amazon patents wristband that monitors supply workers’ hand movements

Amazon earned two patents for a wristband that could track warehouse workers’ live hand movements, reports The New York Times.

The online retailer filed the patent applications in 2016 and won them earlier this week.

The wristband would use ultrasonic sound pulses and radio transmissions to monitor where a worker’s hands were in relation to inventory bins. The band would also use vibration as a form of kinesthetic communication to direct workers to the right bins.

Amazon believes the wristbands will help workers fill orders faster. However, critics cite privacy concerns over the wristbands and question the potential consequences of this level of workplace surveillance.
