7 drug, devicemakers in the headlines

Here are seven drug and medical device companies that made headlines in the past week.

1. Former Insys CEO arrested for alleged opioid scheme
Police arrested John Kapoor, founder and former CEO of Insys Therapeutics, in Phoenix Oct. 26 on charges of racketeering, conspiracy and fraud related to an alleged scheme to promote the over-prescription of the company's fentanyl-based painkiller Subsys.

2. FDA hires Mylan exec as senior communications adviser
The FDA hired Nina Devlin, Mylan's head of global communications, to serve as a senior communications adviser in the agency.

3. Pfizer to auction off consumer health unit in November, sources say
Pfizer will launch an auction process in November to sell off its consumer healthcare business.

4. Baxter expects $70M revenue loss from Hurricane Maria
Baxter on Oct. 25 forecasted manufacturing disruptions caused by Hurricane Maria will cost the company about $70 million in the fourth quarter of fiscal year 2017. 

5. FDA issues warning letter to Magellan over violations related to blood-lead tests
The FDA issued a warning letter to North Billerica, Mass.-based Magellan Diagnostics after an inspection found the company violated several federal laws with the manufacturing and marketing of its blood-lead testing system. 

6. Novartis receives breakthrough designation from FDA for melanoma drug
The FDA granted breakthrough therapy designation to Novartis' melanoma treatment, a combination of its Tafinlar and Mekinist drugs. 

7. CDC panel endorses GSK's shingles vaccine
GlaxoSmithKline's newly approved shingles vaccine Shingrix is now the preferential choice for inoculation.
