5 recent device, biotech company acquisitions

The following medical device manufacturer and biotech mergers occurred in the past two months.

1. In two days, Minneapolis-based Medtronic announced two acquisition deals. In the first deal, Medtronic acquired Sapiens Steering Brain Stimulation, a Dutch company developing brain stimulation technologies, for approximately $200 million in cash.

2. Medtronic’s second acquisition was of Italian company NGC Medical S.p.A for $350 million. NGC manages cardiovascular suites, operating rooms and intensive care units for hospitals.

3. Dublin, Ireland-based Covidien acquired Irvine, Calif.-based Reverse Medical Corp. Reverse Medical is a medical device company focused on vascular disease management.

4. Roche, a Swiss pharmaceutical company, plans to acquire Brisbane, Calif.-based InterMune, a biotech firm, for $8.3 billion.

5. St. Paul, Minn.-based St. Jude Medical signed a definitive agreement to acquire NeuroTherm, a chronic pain solutions device company.
