For the report, DHL surveyed more than 350 supply chain and operations professionals from five regions across the globe about the worldwide supply chain talent shortage.

Here are four factors leaders identified as contributing to the shortage.

  1. Evolving skill requirements. The ideal supply chain employee holds both operational expertise and professional competencies, like analytical skills, according to DHL. However, fifty-eight percent of survey respondents said individuals with these skills are hard to find.
  1. Aging workforce. A significant portion of the global supply chain workforce meets or exceeds retirement age.
  1. Lack of professional development. Only one third of respondents said their companies have implemented initiatives to create or inspire a future talent pipeline.
  1. A negative perception of the supply chain industry. The future workforce lacks interest in supply chain careers and believes other industries are more prestigious and provide more career opportunities, according to the report.
