UF&Shands Changes Name to University of Florida Health

Gainesville, Fla.-based UF&Shands announced it changed its name to University of Florida Health to reflect its relationship with the University of Florida as an academic medical center.

UF Health is the new name of UF&Shands. The new name is designed to emphasize part of what differentiates the health system from its competitors — its ties to UF — and unify its clinical, research and education endeavors under one brand, according to the release. Health system officials aim for the new name to help attract and retain talented physicians, nurses, faculty, staff and students and secure research funding, according to the news release.

UF Health Science Center and Shands HealthCare will remain separate organizations, and Shands will continue to be part of the name of hospitals and programs in Gainesville, Fla., although it will be cut from the hospital in Jacksonville, Fla., according to the release. Here are some of the name changes as part of the new brand:

•    Shands at the University of Florida in Gainesville is now UF Health Shands Hospital. Other new names in Gainesville include UF Health Shands Children's Hospital and UF Health Shands Rehab Hospital.
•    Shands Jacksonville (Fla.) will become UF Health Jacksonville. "Research conducted in the fall of 2012 indicated that the hospital's tie to UF has positive brand recognition in the highly competitive Jacksonville market," UF Health Jacksonville CEO Russ Armistead said in the release.
•    UF College of Medicine and the UF Institute on Aging will retain their current names, while UF Shands Cancer Center will become UF Health Cancer Center.
•    The faculty group practice UF Physicians, located in Gainesville, will become UF Health Physicians.
