The U.S. ranked 24th on the World Happiness Report 2025, marking its lowest ranking in the 13-year history of the list.
The report is a collaboration between Gallup, the Oxford Wellbeing Research Centre and the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network, according to a March 20 joint news release. It uses Gallup World Poll data from 2022 to 2024, including respondents’ self-evaluations of their lives. The world poll data has included more than 150,000 respondents in more than 140 countries.
Rankings are determined by a three-year average of each country’s quality of life assessments. Experts analyze the variations in rankings using factors such as healthy life expectancy and GDP per capita, the release said.
Finland topped the list as the world’s happiest country for the eighth year in a row, while Costa Rica (6th) and Mexico (10th) entered the top 10 for the first time. The United Kingdom (23rd) reported its lowest average life evaluation since the 2017 report.
