The news organization partnered with Statista, a global data and business intelligence portal, for the rankings.

Rankings are based on extensive online surveys of medical experts, who offer recommendations for their peers within and outside of their states, according to a news release.

Analysts also examine physician performance data from Medicare and other databases to evaluate the quality and quantity of procedures performed, the release said.

Additionally, analysts examine factors such as physicians’ board certifications as well as quality-of-care ratings by peers.

The “America’s Best Vascular Surgeons” ranking recognizes 200 surgeons. The “America’s Best Spine Surgeons” ranking recognizes 150 surgeons, representing the 20 states with the highest numbers of practicing physicians. The “America’s Best Prostate Cancer Surgeons” ranking recognizes the top 150 individuals in each of two categories: prostate cancer oncologists and prostate cancer surgeons.
