Hospitals in the Midwest score the highest in hospital performance metrics, a recent study found.
The study, published June 11 in PLOS One, analyzed Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems survey data from 3,286 U.S. hospitals from July 2021 to June 2022. The HCAHPS survey measures patient satisfaction across several aspects. The study analyzed categories including cleanliness, communication, staff responsiveness, medication information, discharge processes, care transition, overall rating, quietness and hospital recommendations.
Here are five things to know:
1. The Midwest consistently scored the highest in hospital performance metrics.
2. The “other” region, which included places like the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico, received the lowest scores, especially in staff responsiveness and discharge information.
3. By individual states, New York and South Carolina performed poorly, while South Dakota ranked at the top in nearly every category.
4. Across all regions, communication about medications and discharge instructions were the lowest-rated aspects of care.
5. Overall satisfaction and willingness to recommend a hospital were rated “moderately high” across all regions.
