The healthiest, unhealthiest states for older adults in 2025, per UnitedHealth

Vermont is the healthiest state for older adults in 2025, according to a new report from the UnitedHealth Foundation. 

The group published its 13th  annual “America’s Health Rankings Senior Report” on May 6. 

States were ranked using 55 measures across five categories of health: social and economic factors, physical environment, behaviors, clinical care and health outcomes.

In 2024, Vermont was ranked third, behind Utah and Colorado. 

Nationwide, the early death rate decreased 9% between 2022 and 2023, and falls and obesity rates remained relatively stable. Suicide deaths increased by 5% and drug deaths increased by 58% between 2018 and 2020 and 2021 and 2023.

Here are the highest and lowest-ranked states, according to the UnitedHealth Foundation:

5. Connecticut 

6. New Hampshire 

7. Minnesota 

8. Massachusetts 

9. Maryland 

10. Hawaii 

Unhealthiest states: 

40. New Mexico 

41. Nevada 

42. Missouri 

43. Tennessee

44. Alabama 

45. Arkansas 

46. Kentucky 

47. Oklahoma 

48. West Virginia 

49. Louisiana 

50. Mississippi
