St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital was founded by entertainer Danny Thomas under the belief that “no child should die in the dawn of life.” The hospital is unique in that public contributions cover 75 percent of its operating costs, which total $2.4 million per day. No family pays for their child to receive treatment at St. Jude, which provides care for serious pediatric illnesses. Since it was founded in 1962, the hospital has improved patient survival rates from 4 percent to 94 percent.
