Sentara Norfolk (Va.) General Hospital. Sentara Norfolk General Hospital is the flagship of the 12-hospital Norfolk-based Sentara Healthcare system, which dates back to 1888 when it started as the 25-bed Retreat for the Sick in Norfolk. Today, Norfolk General is 525-bed medical center that serves as the primary teaching institution for Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk. Norfolk General is considered a destination medical center in the mid-Atlantic. It houses a Level I trauma center, burn unit and nationally ranked heart and diabetes/endocrinology programs by U.S. News & World Report for 2016-17. The hospital is currently under construction as part of an expansion and modernization project slated for completion in 2020.
