Seventy-seven hospitals earned meritorious recognition for their 2025 surgical outcomes from the American College of Surgeons’ National Surgical Quality Improvement Program, the organization said Oct. 28.
The honorees represent nearly 13% of the 594 hospitals eligible for the distinction and 11.4% the 657 that participated in the program in 2025. To qualify, a hospital had to submit at least one surgical case in each of 2023, 2024 and 2025.
ACS NSQIP names hospitals to two lists: an “all cases” list and a “high risk” list that weighs only higher-risk operations. This year, 59 hospitals made the all-cases list and 60 made the high-risk list, with 42 landing on both. Twelve of the recognized hospitals are outside the U.S.
Recognition is based on a composite score drawn from eight risk-adjusted outcomes measured 30 days after surgery: mortality, pneumonia, cardiac arrest and myocardial infarction, unplanned intubation, renal failure, surgical site infections, urinary tract infections and ventilator use over 48 hours after surgery.
Forty-two hospitals were honored for meritorious outcomes for all cases and high-risk cases:
