Mississippi residents spend the highest share of their earnings on healthcare while Maryland residents spend the lowest, according to a May 29 analysis from WalletHub.
The personal finance website analyzed the prices of five components, including the costs of physician, dentist and optometrist visits, plus the prices of ibuprofen and lipitor, across the states.
WalletHub calculated the individual component costs, adjusted the total based on each state’s median monthly income, and used the results to rank the states. The ranking is based on data collected as of May 1 from the Council for Community and Economic Research and the U.S. Census Bureau. More information about the methodology is available here.
