Madison, Wis.-based UW Health Kids has opened a dedicated pediatric interventional radiology suite at American Family Children’s Hospital.
The suite is the first implementation in the world of GE HealthCare’s Allia Moveo image-guiding system for pediatric interventional radiology and the fourth of its kind worldwide currently being used for patient care, according to a July 16 news release. It will support minimally invasive procedures using imaging technologies including MRI, ultrasound, fluoroscopy and CT, and will also be used for research.
UW Health said the new suite is expected to double the number of interventional radiology procedures performed annually at American Family Children’s Hospital. Eric Monroe, MD, pediatric interventional radiologist at UW Health Kids, said the program has grown from about 300 procedures annually in 2021 to about 800 today, creating the need for additional capacity.
The dedicated space is also expected to expand access to pediatric heart care by freeing capacity in the hospital’s shared interventional cardiology space and allowing more minimally invasive procedures to move out of operating rooms.
