MedPAC Recommends Strategies to Combat Imaging Overuse

The Medicare Payment Advisory Commission has voted 15 to 1 to recommend CMS require prior authorization before certain physicians can order imaging tests, according to a Cardiovascular Business report.

The recommendation would apply to those physicians who order more advanced diagnostic imaging tests than their peers. MedPAC is also recommending lower payments for successive imaging services performed in the same session.
