Patients undergoing mammography preferred having their images interpreted by a radiologist before and after AI review, according to a study published April 18 in Radiology: Imaging Cancer.
Researchers from Dallas-based University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center surveyed 518 mammogram recipients between February and August 2023 to identify their opinions around AI imaging interpretation.
Here are five things to know from the study:
- Among all participants, 76.5% reported having “none” or “minimal” knowledge of AI.
- Having their imaging interpreted by AI alone was acceptable to 4.44% participants.
Having their imaging interpreted by AI after radiologist interpretation was acceptable to 71% of participants. - If a participant had an abnormal screening flagged by AI, 88.9% said they would request for their images to be reviewed by a radiologist, compared to 51.3% who said they would request for AI to do so.
- If a discrepancy was found between AI and radiologist interpretation, 94.2% of patients preferred a diagnostic examination with a radiologist, compared to 92.6% who preferred recall review through AI.
- Patients with a higher education level and non-white Hispanic patients were more likely to accept AI.
