The study, published Feb. 7 in Journal of the American College of Radiology, used the Association of American Medical College’s national database of faculty members at accredited schools to track trends in the number of part-time academic radiologists over a 10-year span.
Here are four findings:
1. The number of full-time academic radiologists on clinical educator track climbed about 3.6% between 2015 and 2024. It went from 3,276 to 4,515.
2. However, the part-time faculty fell from 234 people to 84.
3. There was nearly a 59% drop in the number of women working part-time in radiology until 2020, compared to a 68% drop in the number of part-time male radiologists in academia.
4. There were consistently more women faculty than men at the assistant, associate and professor ranks, according to the study.
“Both resignation and reduced time status have been proposed as reasons for national radiologist shortage since the COVID pandemic,” the study authors wrote. “However, our findings suggest that reductions in academic radiology part-time employment began some five years earlier.”
