UPMC, Geisinger, Highmark Seek to Sell Plans in Pennsylvania Exchange

Two large Pennsylvania hospital systems — University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and Danville-based Geisinger Health System — want to sell plans in the state's federally run health insurance exchange, according to a Pittsburgh Tribune-Review report.

Nonprofit Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association Pennsylvania health insurers, including Pittsburgh-based Highmark, Capital Blue Cross in Harrisburg and Independence Blue Cross and Blue Cross of Northeastern Pennsylvania in Wilkes-Barre, also want to participate in the exchange, according to the report. For-profit health insurer Aetna and HealthAmerica — a subsidiary of Aetna-owned Coventry Health Care in Bethesda, Md. — have also sought to sell policies in the exchange.

The federal government will manage Pennsylvania's health insurance exchange due to the state's decision not to establish its own under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, according to the report.
