UnitedHealth Q3 Profits Inch Upward Almost 1%

Third-quarter net earnings at health insurer UnitedHealth Group have increased by 0.8 percent, from approximately $1.56 billion in 2012 to $1.57 billion this year.

UnitedHealth, the country's largest insurer, reported quarterly revenues of $30.6 billion, a 12 percent year-over-year increase. UnitedHealthcare, the main subsidiary of UnitedHealth, accounted for most of the third-quarter revenue at $28.4 billion.

For the nine months ended Sept. 30, 2013, UnitedHealth reported net earnings of $4.24 billion, down from $4.28 billion in the first nine months of 2012. Total revenues increased by 11.6 percent, from $81.8 billion in the first nine months of 2012 to $91.3 billion this year. However, total operating costs also went up by 12.7 percent, from $74.7 billion last year to $84.2 billion in 2013. Interest expense also increased from $459 million last year to $532 million this year.
