New York City Public Hospitals: Hurricane Sandy Costs to Surpass $800M

The New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation, which operates 11 acute-care hospitals throughout New York City, announced the damage costs to its health system from October's superstorm, Hurricane Sandy, will total roughly $810 million.

HHC President and CEO Alan Aviles, JD, said in a news release that a majority of those costs will go toward the repair of electrical, water, heating and communications systems, as well patient care areas, at three of the system's hospitals. HHC's Bellevue Hospital in Manhattan and Coney Island Hospital in Brooklyn suffered some of the heaviest damage.

HHC expects that permanent reconstruction costs will total $472.5 million. Estimated revenue losses will sum to $180 million, while emergency protective measures, such as removing debris and pumping water out, will cost $137.5 million.
