KPMG: Payors Already Preparing for Participation in Health Exchanges

Results from a poll conducted by KPMG shows healthcare payors are already participating or planning to participate in health insurance exchanges.

The results reflect responses from more than 130 health plan administrators who self selected to participate in a KPMG webcast poll in September. Key findings from that poll include the following:

•    More than two-thirds of health plan business leaders said they had analyzed the operational impacts and developed a plan of action to become exchange ready or had started implementing required changes and are on schedule to meet the October 2013 open enrollment deadline to participate in an exchange.
•    Additionally, 17 percent said they had analyzed customer opportunities and developed a market specific product strategy.
•    Eleven percent said they had not started planning to enter an exchange but intend to participate.
•    Only 7 percent said they don't intend to participate in an exchange.

Health insurance exchanges are structures required under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. The exchanges are intended to serve as competitive marketplaces for uninsured individuals seeking healthcare coverage.
