Arizona Senate Sides With Governor, Michigan Rejects Medicaid Expansion

Two state senates took different directions in their latest votes on expanding Medicaid.

Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer (R) was able to garner enough support from fellow Republicans in the state Senate to pass a budget that includes the Medicaid expansion, despite the rift created among her party since she backed the president’s optional provision in January to enroll more low-income Americans in exchange for additional federal funding, according to a report by the Arizona Republic. The bill now goes to the House for a final vote.

Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder (R) had less cooperation from GOP senators. The Senate passed its budget with no language regarding the expansion Gov. Snyder supported, according to a report by the Detroit News. The House also rejected the governor’s bill but proposed an alternative that would make more low-income residents with a four-year time limit for nondisabled adults. Gov. Snyder and others doubt HHS would issue the waiver necessary to implement such a policy.
