8 Statistics on U.S. Distribution of Healthcare Expenditures

Hospital care takes up the largest portion of national healthcare expenditures in the United States, and care from physicians and other professionals sits solidly in second, according to statistics from the Kaiser Family Foundation.


Hospital care represents 36.3 percent of healthcare expenses across the country. Florida is the only state where physician and professional services surpass hospital care (30.9 percent to 30.8 percent). Excluding the District of Columbia, Missouri has the highest overall percentage of hospital care to total expenditures at 45.1 percent. Here are eight statistics on the national distribution of healthcare expenses.

Hospital care: 36.3 percent
Physician and other professional services: 27.4 percent
Prescription drugs and other medical non-durables: 14 percent
Nursing home care: 6.6 percent
Dental services: 4.9 percent
Home healthcare: 3.3 percent
Medical durables: 1.7 percent
Other health, residential and personal care: 5.9 percent
