14 Service Lines That Present Opportunity for Cost Control

Of the 10 percent of hospitals that were "aggressive cost cutters" from 2009 through 2011, almost half of those organizations' cost decreases stemmed from four service lines.

 

The most cost decreases came from the following 14 service lines, in descending order:

 

1. General surgery
2. Neonatal
3. Obstetrics/delivery
4. Infectious diseases
5. Gastrointestinal medicine
6. Pulmonary medicine
7. Rehabilitation
8. Cardiovascular medicine
9. Electro-physiology
10. Neurological medicine
11. Psychiatry
12. Open heart surgery
13. Oncology medicine
14. Vascular surgery
