Yale-New Haven Hospital now provides video-based interpretation services

Yale-New Haven (Conn.) Hospital has partnered with Stratus Video Interpreting to expand access to interpretation services and provide on-demand medical interpretation to patients who are deaf, hard of hearing or who have limited English proficiency.

The hospital has installed stationary as well as mobile touch-screen units that enable staff to access remote video interpreting from Stratus when an in-person interpreter is not available.

The stationary units are in emergency departments, transplant centers and operating suites, currently being used at two campuses and the Shoreline Medical Center with more locations to follow. The mobile units are designed for use in infusion centers, labor and birth suites, physical therapy centers and other areas.

The service provides interpretation in more than 175 languages. So far, the most requested languages at Yale-New Haven Hospital are Spanish, Arabic and American Sign Language.

“As the first hospital in the state of Connecticut to deploy Stratus Video’s on-demand medical interpretation services across multiple departments and campuses, we are committed to serving the needs of patients who are deaf, hard of hearing or of limited English proficiency,” said Maureen Rosselli, the deaf and hard of hearing coordinator at Yale-New Haven Hospital.
