Morgantown, W.Va.-based WVU Medicine Golisano Children’s has partnered with the Mid-Atlantic Mothers’ Milk Bank to become a donor breast milk depot.
The hospital will serve as a collection site where approved donors can drop off breast milk. The milk will be stored in the Little Mountaineer Pharmacy and transported to the Mid-Atlantic Mothers’ Milk Bank for screening, testing and distribution to hospitals and families, according to an April 27 health system news release.
Infants, particularly those born prematurely, receive donor breast milk while in the hospital’s care. The pharmacy and infant nutrition teams coordinate to provide breast milk to patients.
Donors must complete a screening process and follow pumping and storage guidelines before donating. The partnership is intended to increase donor participation and expand access to donor milk across the region, the release said.
