Weill Cornell will co-lead a tuberculosis research unit with Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, also in New York City, as part of a collaboration among six institutions closely allied with voluntary pharmaceutical partners.
The two partners will attempt to identify how tuberculosis bacteria infect human bodies and how agents might attack vulnerabilities in the bacteria.
Drug-resistant tuberculosis-causing bacteria are becoming an increasingly pressing global problem. In 2013, roughly 9 million new cases of the infection were reported and 1.5 million people died worldwide.
