US pledges $19.8M to develop Zika vaccine

Takeda Pharmaceutical received financial help from the federal government to develop a Zika vaccine, reports The Wall Street Journal.

The U.S. pledged $19.8 million toward initial development of a vaccine under a contract that could reach $312 million, according to the article.

Takeda, based in Japan, told The Wall Street Journal the Japanese government, with which it is working on fighting pandemic influenza, could join the Zika vaccine efforts.

Other companies are also trying to develop a Zika vaccine, including French drugmaker Sanofi.
