UPMC disciplined a surgeon and a nurse after it discovered the professionals were involved in the transplant of a kidney from a donor infected with hepatitis C. The surgeon was demoted, while the nurse was suspended. Now CMS investigators say the unnamed nephrologist responsible for reviewing the transplant donor’s health prior to the procedure is also at fault. According to the news report, it is unknown whether the nephrologist was disciplined.

The kidney transplant program has since been shut down.
