In New York, there have been 177 measles cases reported since fall 2018, while in Washington, the number of cases totaled 34 in four weeks, and health officials declared the outbreak a public health emergency.

"Measles is a highly contagious respiratory disease caused by a virus, which spreads to others through coughing and sneezing," said Umair A. Shah, MD, executive director of Harris County Public Health. "However, it is easily preventable. Parents and caregivers have the power to protect their children and themselves from this disease by getting vaccinated."

The CDC recommends children receive two doses of the Measles, Mumps and Rubella vaccine to ensure they are protected.
