Study: Verbal Abuse of Nurses Linked to Poor Work Environment

Physicians’ verbal abuse toward nurses is associated with a poor work environment, according to a study in Nursing Outlook.

A survey of 1,328 early career registered nurses revealed several factors associated with their perception of verbal abuse by physicians:

•    Poor workgroup cohesion
•    Lower supervisory and mentor support
•    Greater quantitative workload
•    Organizational constraints
•    Nurse-colleague verbal abuse
•    Lower nurse job satisfaction
•    Lower nurse organizational commitment
•    Lower nurse intent to stay

The authors noted that causality is unclear — a poor work environment could cause more verbal abuse by physicians, or verbal abuse can cause a poor work environment.
