Researchers at The University of Pennsylvania College of Medicine in Hershey sought to determine the attributable costs and LOS associated with CLABSIs in the pediatric hematology and oncology population.
They examined 1,562 inpatient admissions for 291 pediatric patients between January 2008 and May 2011.
The study demonstrated the additional LOS related to a CLABSI in this population was 21.2 days, and increased costs of nearly $70,000.
They suggest their findings could help shape decisions about efforts to prevent CLABSIs for pediatric oncology patients.
