Study: Fast Tracking Pediatric Congenital Heart Surgery Patients Saves Time, Money

The implementation of fast tracking in pediatric congenital heart surgery was associated with both a shorter length of stay and cost savings at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City, according to a study in Circulation: Cardiovascular Quality & Outcomes.

Researchers compared data on patients aged two months to 19 years who underwent surgery for either atrial or ventricular septal defects over three year periods before and after fast tracking was implemented at the hospital.

After fast tracking was fully implemented, the median length of stay was reduced by one day for both procedures, and hospitalization costs were reduced by one-third. The rate of readmissions remained constant.
