Sanitizer-Dispensing Door Handle Improves Hand Hygiene Compliance

Implementing a door handle that dispenses hand sanitizer increased hand hygiene compliance rates from 24.5 to 77.1 percent, according to a study in American Journal of Infection Control.

Researchers compared the hand hygiene compliance rates between the PullClean sanitizer-dispensing door handle and a traditional wall-mounted sanitizer dispensing unit. The compliance increased for the exam room with the door handle but did not significantly change for rooms with the traditional dispensing unit.

The PullClean door handle has a built-in lever to dispense hand sanitizer, according to a Fast Company report. It also captures data on sanitizer usage.

"You can see changes over seasons or between hospitals, and you can see right down to the second. You can say, 'Hey, you were working in this area over a period, and there were low rates of sanitization. That way you can encourage people as a team to sanitize their hands," said Jake McKnight, CEO of Altitude Medical, one of the developers of PullClean, in the report.
