Risk Stratification Index Could Serve as Robust Assessment of Hospital Mortality, LOS

Based solely on administrative claims data, research findings suggest a risk-stratification model can be used to assess hospital length-of-stay and mortality rates, according to research published in Anesthesiology.

Researchers assessed more than 35 million patient stay records. Risk stratification indices for LOS and mortality were calculated from aggregate risk associated with diagnostic and procedure codes. RSI performance was measured by comparing its measurements against a validation database, institution registry and the Charlson comorbidity index.

Results showed a single RSI predicted 30-day and one-year post-discharge mortality, and a separate RSI predicted LOS and in-hospital mortality. The RSIs performed significantly better than the Charlson comorbidity index for all outcomes.
