The collaboration aims to help reduce sudden infant death syndrome, one of the top three causes of infant death in Indiana and across the country.
“What a sleep sack is, it’s basically a wearable blanket but it secures snuggly around the baby and keeps loose blankets from getting in the baby’s face,” said Kim Schneider, MD, a physician at Riley Children’s Hospital. “That way when they’re sleeping, they don’t have to worry about suffocating. So it keeps the baby warm, safe and feeling secure.”
Ms. Schneider said the initiative will last approximately two years, until IU Health hospitals need to restock the sleep sacks.
