For their study, researchers developed a questionnaire that assessed deviations from best practices during venous blood sampling. It included questions about patient identification, test tube labeling and handling and frequencies of error reporting.
The questionnaire was confirmed for content validity by experts on questionnaires and venous blood sampling. In addition, a test-retest analysis demonstrated that the items were generally stable. In total, 82 percent of the questions fulfilled the reliability acceptance criteria. Validated questionnaires can be utilized to assess near-misses and establish practices that prevent them from becoming adverse events, the author concluded.
