The UK board of trustees approved a proposal to authorize UK President Eli Capilouto to finalize a development plan to potentially relocate the Shriners children’s hospital and its critical children’s healthcare services to the UK campus, according to the release. Under the proposal, SHC-Lexington will develop a new facility near Kentucky Children’s Hospital in Lexington that would offer outpatient surgical services, clinics, physical therapy and other services.
The relocation and new building plan is motivated by an increase in outpatient services demand and decrease in demand for inpatient services at SHC-Lexington. In addition, the majority of SHC-Lexington medical staff are faculty of the department of orthopedics in the UK College of Medicine, and SHC-Lexington supports medical residents and student rotations, according to the release.
UK and Shriners officials hope to finalize a development plan and present a lease and specific agreements to the board of trustees later this year or early next year, according to the release.
