At the clinic, families will be able to meet with a medical practitioner to receive counseling and the signatures required to enroll their children in school — without immunizing them, according to the report.
Under a California law passed in August 2012, parents must file a personal belief exemption and submit a document signed by a physician or other approved clinician acknowledging the parents have been notified of the risks and benefits of vaccines.
The UC Davis physician who spearheaded the clinic — Dean Blumberg, MD — said he is pro-immunization, but also supports parental rights. “That’s why we decided to set up the clinic as a community service, in case there are parents whose health care provider won’t sign the form or some parents who don’t have a primary care provider,” he told the Sacramento Bee.
The cost of a visit to the clinic is still being worked out with the UC Davis administrative team, but Dr. Blumberg has recommended a flat fee of about $25, according to the report.
