Transparency in pricing as crucial as ever

Nilesh Rajadhyax, the vice president of healthcare analytics for TransUnion, authored an article several months ago about the need for providers to clarify pricing as patients adopt the consumer role.

Mr. Rajadhyax’s argument is as relative as ever. According to him, healthcare is one of the last industries in which billing and pricing of services is not consumer-friendly.

According to a TransUnion survey of more than 1,000 insured healthcare consumers, easy-to-understand costs is ranked as the second most important aspect when choosing providers, higher than quality scores and proximity.

Additionally, the survey found more than half (55 percent) of all patients surveyed have started paying more attention to the details of their medical bills over the past year. Two-thirds want to have a complete overview of the costs of care including out-of-pocket costs.

Mr. Rajadhyax maintains that with pressure increasing from payers to reduce prices and from patients to clarify them, having to understand costs and then emphasize greater transparency will be unavoidable.
