The campaign began with a 49ers billboard in the Seattle area before the teams’ showdown two weeks ago. The board was funded by 49ers fans, one of whom put extra money raised for the board toward a fund for Seattle Children’s Hospital. Seahawks fans countered the move by launching a fundraiser to benefit San Francisco’s UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital.
The Seahawks ended the 49ers season on Jan. 19, moving on to become Super Bowl champions Sunday.
But the fundraising campaign went on, and through the Super Bowl fans raised an estimated $364,000 for the children’s hospitals. The money includes matching fund pledges from both of the NFL franchises.
About $284,000 of the total will go to UCSF Benioff, while $80,000 will go to Seattle Children’s, according to one of the fundraisers co-organizers. Seahawks fans reportedly exceeded Niners fans in their fundraising efforts, resulting in San Francisco’s hospital receiving a larger portion of the total, according to the report.
