The CDC has published its first full measles virus genomes tied to the ongoing U.S. outbreak — a delayed move that may mark the end of the country’s measles elimination status, according to an April 2 KFF Health News report.
As of March 26, the U.S. had reported 1,575 confirmed measles cases in 2026, including nine among international visitors. Domestic cases were identified across 32 jurisdictions, including New York City, California, Texas, Florida and Washington, according to CDC data. The surge follows 2,285 cases reported in 2025 — the highest two-year total in more than three decades.
To determine whether the U.S. has experienced 12 months of uninterrupted transmission — the threshold for losing measles elimination status, first certified in 2000 — experts have looked to genomic data that can trace chains of infection. Researchers at the Broad Institute, working under federal contract, sequenced about 1,000 samples from the 2025-2026 outbreak and began submitting data to the CDC in December.
Despite receiving the data months ago, the CDC did not begin publishing it to global databases until late March. According to KFF Health News, public health officials had expected the first sequences to be released in January. CDC staff cited limited internal capacity and a steep learning curve in measles genomics as key reasons for the delay.
The slowdown coincides with broader institutional instability. Interim Director Jay Bhattacharya, MD, PhD, acknowledged the agency’s operational challenges during a March 25 staff meeting, including widespread job cuts and unresolved leadership gaps. That same day, the White House delayed nominating a permanent CDC director, extending Dr. Bhattacharya’s authority beyond his acting title’s expiration.
Public health officials have warned that ongoing disruptions at the CDC could compromise outbreak response and surveillance. Several state and academic labs — including the Utah Public Health Laboratory — have moved faster to sequence and share measles genomes, highlighting growing gaps in the federal agency’s ability to serve as a national data hub.
